Director Rinse Dream is one of the most original filmmakers to dabble in porn. While he only shot a handful of hardcore features during his career, he established a unique style that is impossible to successfully duplicate. His head-spinning iconoclastic features delve into hallucinatory fantasies and wacky humor in equal measure. Rinse Dream's first foray into hardcore was when he directed 1981's 'Night Dreams.' He instantly impressed fans and critics alike with his original vision. The flick starred Dorothy Le May as a woman stashed away in a strange sex clinic, overcome by a sexual psychosis of sorts. This set-up allows Rinse Dream to explore Le May's wild sexual fantasies, getting into her delirious dream world and staying there for most of the film. Le May experiences a series of eerie, unhinged sex dreams, highlighted by a trip to Hell and a coupling with a double-endowed devil. The film established Rinse Dream as a true porn visionary. He went even further in 1982's 'Cafe Flesh.' It's a strange sci-fi tale of a post-apocalyptic world in which 99% of the population has been rendered sexually inert. The remaining 1% perform endless sex shows at futuristic clubs like Cafe Flesh, trying to arouse the populace into sexual expression. The film is truly one of a kind, with performers uttering dialogue in flat, emotionless style and sex that's shot and edited in an almost dream-like fashion. It's porn sci-fi of a sort that you'll never see anywhere else. Rinse Dream didn't make another sex film until 1990, when he returned to the fold with 'Night Dreams 2.' It's another hallucinatory epic, this time revolving around another batch of patients at an eerie sex clinic. The cast is headed by Tianna, who plays a woman who dreams of weird appendages growing out of her. The sex in this one is even more odd than in
the original, spinning an almost nightmarish web of erotic imagery that's equal parts art and arousal. 'Night Dreams 3' continued the story, so to speak, delivering another batch of psychologically tormented trysts. 1991 saw the release of Rinse Dream's 'Party Doll A Go-Go,' a film that he called a 'sexy stream of consciousness.' It explores the sexual subconscious of Tianna, flitting from sexual liaisons to talking heads shots of performers verbalizing the random -- and sometimes humorous --thoughts bouncing through her brain. The sex is dehumanized and clinical, turning into robotic acts that illustrate the unhinged brain patterns of Tianna's tormented soul. It's like a psychosexual version of 'Laugh-In.' It's 1992 sequel goes even further, dispassionately watching a series of wild sexual encounters that are kept at an eerie arm's length. The abrupt edits and cold line readings push this film even further into the realm of 'art film.' 1992's 'Untamed
Cowgirls of the Wild West' was also in a similar vein, but it took a much more light-hearted approach to its artful sexual explorations. This time, the non-sequiter title cards strive for humor, while the sex is slightly less dispassionate. There's no story, but the film consists of several strange outings depicting some cowgirls and their erotic attachment to their guns. It's another flick that only Rinse Dream could possibly make. Rinse Dream's last hardcore feature was 1993's 'Untamed Cowgirls of the Wild West 2.' It continued and expanded on the themes of the original, but is widely considered to be a pale imitation. The humor falls flat more often, and much of the film seems to indulge in almost shameless self--promotion. After
that flick, Rinse Dream returned to his successful mainstream career and left porn behind forever. Still, love him or hate him, Rinse Dream shot some of the most wildly innovative sex films of all time. He's one of the few porn shooters who seemed genuinely interested in raising the genre to the level of art, and while he only sporadically succeeded, his efforts should be appreciated.
